Statute Change - Public Defender Funding

Statute Change - Public Defender Funding

July 1, changes to Chapter 215 go into effect.  This Omnibus Budget Reduction Act will reduce the budget for the Public Defenders as well as other governmental organizations.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the Public Defenders, they are willing to take on all sorts of cases in the interest of justice.  They also have a vast amount of experience in the court room.  However, with the constant reduction of funding they are continuously understaffed.  The latest I heard from some Public Defenders they were already dealing with between 80-300 cases each (it's a broad range apparently).  To see just how overworked we just need to look at this ACS report.

If you have legal issues, I strongly advise you to seek out private representation to ensure that you are fully represented and your attorney has time to review your case.  At Ascheman & Smith we will go over every aspect of your case and the law with you.
